Several members of the Minneapolis City Council said today that they will vote to disband the Minneapolis Police Department and find community-based alternatives. They have a veto-proof majority.
The ACLU of Minnesota released this statement:
The ACLU of Minnesota is pleased the Minneapolis City Council plans to divest in the police department and focus on community alternatives. Any solution must rely heavily on input from BIPOC — who have been abused and ignored for so long — input that council members are promising to seek. We will hold you accountable for seeking this input, and for creating a system that eliminates the racial disparities that have long defined our criminal legal system and that ends brutality by law enforcement. We appreciate the long and hard work our allies Black Visions Collective, Reclaim the Block and others have done to set the stage for this day.
